On the occasion of Bob Bonies’ 88th birthday, Galerie Ramakers presents a solo exhibition featuring work from various phases of his rich oeuvre. The exhibition brings together paintings from the 1960s and 1970s with recent work, offering a unique perspective on the development of his visual language.
Bonies (The Hague, 1937) is considered one of the most important representatives of geometric-abstract art in the Netherlands. His work is deeply rooted in the principles of De Stijl and Russian Constructivism, yet it stands out through a highly personal and systematic approach. Since the mid-1960s, Bonies has worked with a strict color palette (primary red, blue, and yellow, supplemented with green and white) and a consistent visual language of rectangles, squares, and circles. Within these self-imposed constraints, he creates surprisingly dynamic compositions that continually stretch the boundaries of traditional painting.
The exhibition at Galerie Ramakers highlights the ongoing relevance of Bonies’ work. His large-scale canvases — precise, powerful, and visually intense — display a rare balance between form, color, and space. For collectors, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see works from different periods side by side, and to experience both the continuity and evolution of his oeuvre.
With this exhibition, the gallery not only honors an impressive artistic career spanning more than six decades, but also celebrates an artist whose work continues to exert lasting influence both nationally and internationally.
Opening: Sunday, September 7, from 3 PM
