First solo exhibition by Hans Schuttenbeld.
Hans Schuttenbeld (b. 1991) presents a story of wonder in the exhibition “Changing Patterns”. "When I enter the studio and enter into dialogue with the white surface, I first appeal to my library of wonder. This is filled by carefully watching and listening to the world around me, and by playfully continuing to create."
The collected subjects and painting techniques are united in the paintings and drawings. Together, the works create an impression of a psychedelically poetic world, breathing the energy of an artistic craftsman; driven by curiosity and working from skill.
Organic structures built from rhythmic brushstrokes are a recurring motif within this exhibition. It is in this manner of painting in which Schuttenbeld satisfies his desire for magic. By attentively interweaving many actions, the still image is set in motion and depth appears in the flat surface. The figurative paintings mostly depict trees, branches and related creatures, while the more abstract works seem to zoom in on their structures.
Hans Schuttenbeld on the tree as a subject:
For me, the tree symbolizes the connection between heaven and earth, between the material and the immaterial. Deeply rooted in the dark soil, there where it was once born, reaching out to the light on which it is so dependent. My whole life is enclosed between birth -realization of the material being- and death -realization of the spiritual being-. In between lies the latitude; the challenge to live this life. It is enriching to have the tree as a symbol for this.
In 2020, Hans Schuttenbeld received the Young Talent work grant from the Mondriaan Fund. This supported him in moving from Graphic Design (2015, Willem de Kooning Academy), to the autonomous arts. Meanwhile, Schuttenbeld participated in a number of art fairs (including Art Rotterdam, PAN Amsterdam, Enter Art Fair Copenhagen) with his Galerie Roger Katwijk. Furthermore, Schuttenbeld participated in several group exhibitions. His works are included in several corporate collections (Dela, AkzoNobel), and many private collections. Furthermore, his work has been shown in museums (Kunsthal KAdE, Stedelijk Museum).
In addition, Schuttenbeld is part of the artist collective High on Type; an established name within the world of calligraphy and lettering.
