Ahead of KunstRAI Amsterdam 2025, SmithDavidson Gallery presents an exclusive online preview of new works by Dutch artist Matthijs Scholten in the new online exposition “The Painted Talisman”.
Created in his studios near Amsterdam and in Bali, these recent paintings mark a further evolution in Scholten’s artistic practice. Deeply rooted in personal emotion and intuition, his work blends spontaneity with structure, combining expressive brushwork, vibrant color, and recurring motifs such as flowers, animals, and angelic figures.
Scholten’s paintings are known for their layered, symbolic narratives. Constructivist compositions and bold textures meet references to street art, pop culture, and the naive spirit of CoBrA artists like Karel Appel and Corneille. The result is a distinctive visual language, playful yet reflective, raw yet refined.
Following successful exhibitions in Miami, Chicago, and New York, SmithDavidson Gallery is proud to bring Scholten’s dynamic new body of work to KunstRAI. “The Painted Talisman” offers a first look at pieces that will be shown at the fair, highlighting the artist’s unique approach to painting and storytelling.
