Lindsey Carr explores in her new exhibition ‘Wanderlust’ the concept of a female botanist as a modern Darwin, discovering new life forms in space. Her oil paintings depict futuristic visions with atmospheric landscapes filled with fantastical mushrooms and mycelial networks. The works in watercolors serve as a visual logbook of her scientific discoveries.
Drawing inspiration from Victorian natural history sources, Carr paints with the same dedication and craftsmanship as the old masters. Remarkably, as a former machine learning programmer (A.I.), she utilizes her own written code to determine compositions and color schemes of her sketches. The works thus combine classical techniques with contemporary technology.
“I enjoy the feeling of not being ‘in control’ of every aspect of the artwork. The artwork is, for me, a collaboration between myself and the chance involved.” - Lindsey Carr
