Subsequently, from January 31st to February 4th at Art Rotterdam, GoMulan Gallery presents a curated selection of Drummen's paintings in a duo exhibition together with sculptural works by Ulrike Rehm (1976) at Booth 86.
Ulrike Rehm, trained in a woodworkers' guild, later studied at the Rietveld Academy. She obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2006 and her Master's degree from the Sandberg Institute in 2011. Folkloric tales, traditions, archetypal figures, and the inherent symbolism and associations associated with them serve as Rehm's major sources of inspiration. Curiosity and an adventurous spirit guide Rehm's artistic development. Her versatile use of materials evokes a sense of wonder in the viewer.
Suzan Drummen works across various disciplines and has created numerous artworks in public spaces. Drummen is particularly renowned for her installations featuring shiny components, as seen on the footbridge in Depot Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam. However, at the core of all her work are large paintings from the nineties.
The fascination with illusions on a flat surface is also unmistakable in her recent works. Distortions and optical effects tumble over each other. Spatial constructions in vibrant colors are combined with spheres in soft tones. It seems as if you can wander around in these paintings just as you can in her installations.
