The starting point in Slootmaekers' work is to reveal the inaccuracies in our thinking and to consider what is not more important than what is not. From his analytical methodology as a biochemist, which he also applies in his artistry with regard to objects and words, works of art and installations were created, freed from their daily application and collective system. Very often stripped of their aesthetics and value, but reduced to their actual nature, humor and irony are never far away. With questions such as “Can a bucket be reduced to a larger volume” or “Can an object be rebuilt with the parts of this object itself?” this view is crucial for the further evolution of Slootmaekers' work.
Objects, texts and words are given a narrative context through its intervention or composition. The investigation into the possible and the change this brings about for the viewer. Defining structures and the search for the authenticity of the object and/or composition in relation to the pattern of action.
The objects that we use every day or experience familiarly in their application have all lost their identity. It is this lost individuality that Slootmaekers returns to the objects or installations, with a playful or socially critical note. It is, as it were, letting these objects stand up for themselves, giving them the opportunity to tell their own story.
Consider the set up as a revelation of the contradictions in our control systems, reality seems to be more interesting, funnier and more real than one experiences at first glance.
Away from rigidity, in search of the sense of possibility.
