Root Gallery presents the works of Sophie de Vos and guest artist Jan Theun van Rees during this year's edition of Unseen Amsterdam! Their works complement each other very well, each offering very different perspectives - both visually and conceptually. On view at Unseen is a selection of their recent works as well as new creations.
During Unseen, Sophie de Vos shows the results of new research within two series: ‘It may not be made of stone, it is my forever home’ is a series that researches our bodies as being our only real home. 'I followed the footsteps of a stranger ' embraces the element of nostalgia, resulting in images that feel both familiar and mysterious. The pitch black backdrop where body parts seem to appear from, or disappear into, relates to the hidden, the secretive and the unknown, and as a result it creates an air of mystery.
Jan Theun van Rees will be presenting new works from his Perforated Space series in which he uses light and composition to create a connection between interior spaces and the outside world. Using material rescued from waste containers, Jan Theun constructed spaces where he plays with the light that streams in through many different openings. The surroundings in the picture plane offer a passage to a new unfamiliar reality.
