Denis Rouvre is a world renowned photographer, most well-known for his striking portraiture. He has won numerous prizes such as the World Press Photo Award, Sony Photography award, and a Hasselblad Master award. Due to his extensive accolades he has exhibited his work internationally and has been acquired and exhibited by various museums.
In his most recent series AVATĀRA, Denis Rouvre explores a new tribe. They are called Mistica, Bboy, Vitor and Demonia or Drika. Appearing before our eyes is “The New Man”, transformed, augmented, singular, and unique in its genre. To this tribe, the body is no longer a carnal envelope, the body is a manifesto, a hymn. While most people keep their secrets deep within, they display them. They choose themselves, expressing themselves through Lingual bifurcation, implants, eye and face tattoos and the removal of body parts with no possible return. What do we call this display? Perhaps a way to externalize their soul, to make their deep troubles visible, aligning it with themselves. As Denis Rouvre says “If we accept their difference, we are able to accept all other”. This new aesthetic challenges our prejudices, giving us an ode to life.
