Galerie Caroline O'Breen is participating in Enter Art Fair Copenhagen with a duo-presentation of Bart Lunenburg and Jaya Pelupessy.
Within his multidisciplinary art practice, Bart Lunenburg (b. 1995, NL) researches themes related to architecture and its history, urban design, and architectural heritage. The artist approaches buildings and cities as if they had a memory of their own. Lunenburg works with photography and video as well as with sculpture, drawing, textile, and spatial installations. Usually, these different modes of expression have a similar starting point — he often creates scale models to develop his research.
Jaya Pelupessy (b. 1989, NL) is fascinated by the enormous role that photography plays in our everyday lives. We increasingly observe the world through the lens of a camera. We share moments and experiences through images and shape our own reality. Pelupessy searches for a different understanding of the image by analysing and deconstructing historical reproduction techniques and using them in a different way to create an image. He invites us to reflect on how images are made and what this means for our perception of the world around us. In Manufactured Manual, Pelupessy combines a selection of archival photographs with images taken during his visits to the United States of America, one of the most documented landscapes in the history of photography. These images are then altered using contemporary image manipulation techniques and AI-driven software, emphasising the construction of the image. The artist uses the photosensitive principle of screen printing and has developed special photosensitive colour emulsions. He creates an image directly on the silkscreen, using multiple exposures in different colour layers. In this way, the screen is no longer a means of reproducing images, but becomes the work itself. This is typical of Pelupessy's way of working, where the creative process is always evident in the finished product.
