To commemorate the anniversary of the Mariupol Drama Theater tragedy, Chinese artist Lí Wei held a performance titled "one. Another one" at the Tommy Simoens Gallery in Antwerp, Belgium.
The artist presented a giant cake shaped like the Mariupol Drama Theater and recreated the destruction caused by a Russian air strike on March 16, 2022, by cutting and serving cake during the performance. In this way, he wanted to provoke a dialogue between Ukrainian and Western audiences about this event and show that information about even incredible tragedies disappears from the information space very quickly, especially when it happens far away from you.
The artist continues to work on a series of portrait sculptures in the gallery until April 13. For a live exchange of stories, he invites Ukrainians who have moved to Antwerp. Their images will be embodied in sculptures that will form the basis of the upcoming presentation. The sculptures are a way to preserve the memory of today's state of things through the portraits of "Ukranians in Antwerp" and to bring their stories far beyond the Ukrainian information environment.
The exhibition will be displayed from April 14 to 16 at the Tommy Simoens Gallery.
