BIG ART 2021: Studio Seine presents the work of Esmee Seebregts during BIG ART 2021. Art platform BIG ART descends on the industrial Hembrug site for the third and last time. The previous edition was able to take place at the last minute, but with limited public access. This fall, the organization is therefore going extra large. Nearly one hundred major works of art can be experienced and admired here from Thursday 30 September to Sunday 3 October. And for sale! Many artists create new work especially for this edition. Income from orders and sales goes entirely to the participants.
Every year, initiator and curator Van der Zwaag selects a stimulating mix of works of art that match the industrial location: “Per room, a surprising combination of art disciplines, materials and techniques, abstract works and figurative art is examined. As a result, each hall exudes a different atmosphere.” The design is deliberately aimed at a wide audience: “Art lovers are often impressed by the monumental buildings, while people who are interested in the Hembrugterrein are inspired by the variety of works of art. It reinforces each other enormously,” says Van der Zwaag.
BIG ART was started in 2016 by Anne van der Zwaag as an alternative to the more traditional art fairs where space is limited and where permanent stands and white walls are often used. Every year the pop-up platform takes place in a special place with a story. The Hembrugterrein is a hidden gem a stone's throw from Amsterdam. The ammunition factory from the 19th century covers more than 42 hectares and has 108 industrial buildings, 53 of which are monuments. In recent years, a large number of creatives have settled here and turned it into a cultural hotspot. In the coming period, the Hembrug site will be developed into a mixed urban area while retaining its unique character and with a major role for creativity and culture.
