From 16-19 December, DMW Gallery will be participating in the first edition of Art Antwerp with ‘Has-beens & new beans’, a solo exhibition by Ellen Pil. The fair takes place in Antwerp Expo. You can find DMW Gallery at Booth C.15.
'Has-beens & new beans' shows new entries in the on-going series 'Potential lovers' in an installation that places the portraits in a 'Guess Who?'-type formation; like an analogue app through which you are invited to swipe.
The different 'characters' are objects by which Pil is currently fascinated: slots, slits, elements of everyday objects such as a truck or a dish rack, ... With their cartoonish names, they take up positions: they stand, hang or are knocked over in a setting with a two-colour carpet, which further enhances the sense of play. It seems as if Pil is inviting the viewers to intervene in the set-up themselves, to participate in this 'attraction gym' in which we have to work up a sweat to create the ideal combination or the perfect image. Which attributes fit the picture? Which features are desirable and which are not? Do we play the game, or do we watch from the sidelines and prefer to passively scroll through?
