In the exhibition Dinner is served, Eliza Pepermans once again offers us a series of still lifes. The usual protagonists such as fruit, shellfish, books and skulls are once again present. The wine also flows freely as usual. This time, however, food and drink are not references to a summer trip to Burgundy, but are the result of Pepermans' intense research for colour, form and composition.
This study of colour composition was carried out on wooden panels. The pure forms are back and some of the works on display are on the borderline between the figurative and the abstract. The space for interpretation and fantasy that she leaves to her viewers is characteristic of this artist. A sunflower becomes a hand, a hole in a tablecloth could just as easily be an orange.
Before this series the artist travelled through her imagination. This imaginary journey to the south allowed her to meet Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh and Léger. To dine with them in their famous meeting place, La Colombe d'Or, and to taste their southern colour palette. This source of inspiration means that, for example, ochre is present in all the colours she uses. By mixing carefully and precisely, Pepermans works intensively with colour shades, which gives her work a summery warmth.
At the same time Pepermans refines her work, the story is secondary, the technique takes over. In this way, she invites the viewer more than ever to stand still and look closely at the everyday. In this way, the power and beauty of the seemingly banal is brought to light.
