The new gallery season is about to begin and Rutger Brandt Gallery is proud to announce its first exhibition of the season. 'Pause' is the first (solo) exhibition by Zsofia Schweger in the Netherlands. The show will be on view at the gallery from September 4 - October 9, 2021.
Zsofia Schweger (1989) was born and raised in Szeged, Hungary. After studying in Boston and London, she settled in the English capital in 2015. The many relocations she experienced during this time are a source of inspiration for her art. The places which she called home in the past and present are part of her identity. Therefore, she is interested in exploring the relationship between humans and spaces, and the notion of 'home'.
Schweger paints domestic as well as public interiors. She paints in a reductive manner, applying the paint in thin, even layers, thus depicting the spaces through flat color planes. She uses soft, muted colors, invoking an atmosphere of alienation and intimacy at the same time. Her paintings are devoid of human figures, which can make them seem empty and cold, but the peace and orderliness that Schweger incorporates so masterfully also make them seem familiar and approachable. The big sizes in which she often works make it so that the viewer can imagine stepping into the painting.
'Pause' refers to a temporary stop in action. In Schweger's work, the spaces seem silent and unmoving, but a human presence is implied nonetheless.
