For the occasion of Ballroom Project, Antwerp, Galerie Fontana is pleased to present the sculptures of Ronny Delrue and Carolein Smit.
Ronny Delrue is an artist’s artist. Drawing is Delrue’s primary manner to capture an idea and forms the armature for his paintings and sculptures. Through the gesture of a pencil, he grasps the unseen in the heart and mind. The works on display include the artists 'Protected Trees.' More than ever, nature and free thinking needs protection. Past and present come together and wink at the future. The plinth, which was made from the wood of the tree and supports the sculpture, becomes one whole: an installation and a painting with ever-changing light.
Carolein Smit creates exquisite ceramic sculptures that convey a visual language that alludes to a contemporary reading of vanitas; life and death as made visible in her collection of natural, scientific, religious, and anatomical forms. The sculptures classify the weird and rare, in order to maintain the scientific order, but at the same time, they elevate the supernatural to contain the vagaries of nature resulting in a beautiful ambivalence.
