For ‘Rupahu Island’, Degeyter created a series of extraordinary ethnographic objects that he attributes to the fictive Moani, indigenous people of the South Pacific island of Rupahu. The objects vary from engraved shells and carved skulls to decorated buoys in plastic. Visiting the project at Verbeke, many visitors marvel at the objects without noticing they are fake. The inconsistent materials and Disney-esque design raise questions for authenticity among a few attentive viewers. The boundary between reality and fiction is shifted back and forth in the presented analysis. Degeyter is testing the visitor’s critical view of the proposed truths.
