Althuis Hofland Fine Arts is proud to present a solo exhibition by artist Austin Eddy. Within Austin Eddy’s new series of paintings birds loom out of circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. Depicting a certain movement, however they seem paused by their geometrical nature. The paintings derive from a series of drawings made during the recent peek of the pandemic in New York City, when the artist couldn’t attend his studio to paint. The title of the exhibition ‘Birds at Night’ - a variation on the 19th century poem ‘Birds In The Night’ by Paul Verlaine - describes in a poetic manner how Eddy felt the stillness, wonder, and
romance of night time, gave hope and light to the dark matter of daytime reality. In his works the artist deconstructs and synthesizes information from his daily life, whereby he collages cubist, and expressionist elements into a hybridized personal painting vernacular, whilst celebrating the flatness of the medium. This new series of works show a mere introspective view of the moments between dusk and dawn. Symbolizing nocturnes, or odes to the night, longing for better days ahead. Like a bird awaiting the moment to spread its wings and fly away from its cage.
