DUAL EXHIBITION
24 October – 14 November 2020
Opening 24 October, 12 – 6 pm
We are pleased to announce two new exhibitions at TORCH gallery. Running simultaneously, they will both open on 23th of October. In the front space of the gallery we present a selection of paintings by Myrto Christou (1995, Athens, Greece) and in the back space we have artist Thijs Zweers (1986, Enkhuizen) with his neon-drawings. After the two-day preview, this exhibition will run for 4 weeks.
What About Lunch
Myrto Christou (front space)
With an approach reminiscent of the Expressionists, Christou attempts to create an aesthetic experience that mirrors her emotions. Not relying on any structure, she uses freely whatever form suits her mood. Almost like reading words, or listening to music, her strong pictorial language calls upon a certain feeling. With fresh and bold brushwork, Christou convinces us of her intimate communication.
Dance Dance Revolution
Thijs Zweers (back space)
Named after the popular video game, the pieces in Thijs Zweers' latest series Dance Dance Revolution refer to the notion that humans are capable of creatively arranging immaterial mathematical data. A sequence of binary values - ones and zeroes - can be used for expression and creation without material boundaries. A logical system of data is rapidly transforming into a chaotic choreography, a jungle of images, movements and flickering lights.
In these dark drawings made with Siberian chalk and charcoal, Zweers examines the boundaries between our world and the virtual one. First he digitally designs sceneries, which he then transfers onto the canvas by hand. The electronic addition of neon enforces the idea that we are looking at a digital image, contrasting with the traditional technique of the drawing.
