Chrysalid Gallery is very proud to present in collaboration with Photo Basel their first virtual exhibition featuring a selection of artworks by Rabin Huissen and Lisandro Suriel.
The combination of these two artists that work with the medium of photography has at its core two different portrayals of body and colour, both used here as methods of self-expression and of symbolic representation.
Rabin Huissen, with his off-camera prints, has come up his own personal method of creating a photo-sensitive coat on top coloured paper that allows him to create unique pieces that scrutinize the physicality of the body as a tool and as a central subject. Huissen’s body of work manages to masterfully staple together in a subtle visual composition many layers of meaning, producing not only an elegant array but also delivering a project that encapsulates all the critical points of views of his research.
Lisandro Suriel, on a similar hand, wields colours and human presence in his project as elements of critical thinking on post-colonialism and on the deconstruction of New World symbolism.
Through the singular use of imagination, Suriel has created a reality in which folkloric figures act as agents of history and animate cultural memory. His series Ghost Island -of which are here on display a few images- is a series of dreamlike landscapes that open the mind to imaginative thinking by titillating the viewer through the masterful use of visual symbols that carry intrinsic symbolic meaning.
