Focusing entirely on the making process for a year, that is what visual artist Tom Woestenborghs intended on the day he turned 40. He limited himself to three classic themes: floral still life, nude and abstract. Making art in a purely formal way soon turned out to be an impossible task because flower still lifes are easily associated with transience, the female nude with lust, identity, power relations, and voyeurism. And even abstract art evokes associations.
Tom Woestenborghs (1978) makes collages, built up with many layers of adhesive plastic. Photographic images serve as a basis for this. Woestenborghs obtained a master’s degree in painting at St. Lucas in Antwerp, and a post-graduate degree at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts, also in Antwerp.
In December 2019 Woestenborghs showed 34 works from the series ‘Artistic Midlife Crisis of a storyteller, Nudes, Abstracts and some Flowers’ at Pennings Foundation Eindhoven and presented his new publication. Edo Dijksterhuis, freelance journalist and art critic, then opened the exhibition and wrote the text for this publication.
Woestenborghs lives in Merksplas and has his studio in Hoogstraten, Belgium.
