Mariken Wessels (NL, 1963) creates artist’s books, sculptures, installations, photo series, and film works. Her multilayered projects offer picture stories, combining appropriated imagery and self-produced images, usually featuring female protagonists struggling with life.
Wessels’ latest project—comprising sculpture and photography—is about the movements and the animalistic character of the obese human body, inspired by a photo series from Eadweard Muybridge’s Human and Animal Locomotion: ‘Arising from the Ground’ (1885).
