Jan van der Pol (1949, Aalsmeer) at 70 plus– apart from still being an artist full of open-minded, artistic curiosity of a painter pur sang – embraces recently a new experimental
approach with continuous zeal and unwavering energy to achieve a new impressive twist in his oeuvre starting from drawing. Van der Pol is - as art-historian Ingrid Van Santen observes about his recent work, ‘an archivist of imagery’, who is ‘fascinated by mathematical puzzles,
the outcome is an intense experience of beauty and lucidity. […] Images such as these raise
novel questions of dimensions, relating to domination and ecstasy, to boundaries and infinity.’
Van der Pol’s work distinguishes itself from many cross-over experiments in painting today in his focus on researching in depth the pure essence and poetics of painting, such as colour, geometrics, optics and illusion.
Jan van der Pol is nominated for the NN Art Award 2024.
