Anyone who said last year that in 2020 the news would open with an item about the folklore called carbide shooting was probably told undoubtedly crazy. This year, sadly no fireworks at midnight and if Youp van 't Hek doubts whether he wants to hold his New Year's Eve conference for just 30 people, you know that this year was really different. Of course, much remains the same. Children still love Sinterklaas, at Christmas you eat too much for days on end and at New Year’s there are still the obiquitous oliebollen and champagne.
December is also the month of the wish lists. The time of waiting and hoping that you get that one gift you wanted so badly. The latest Assassin's Creed, that one sweater or that new Ottolenghi cookbook. My wish lists include small works of art and editions every year. Last month, French photographer Tasio Bidegain won the RM Photo Award with drawings. A bit odd, but deservedly so. You immediately wonder why you would even bother to pick up a camera if you can draw as well as Bidegain. In the Best of Graduates exhibition at Ron Mandos, Bidegain combined 3 subjects in each drawing: a news photo, the corona virus with a drawing about virtual reality. Stay Home Play More fits in well with this. On this edition of 7, you'll see lots of things that Bidegain noticed during the first lockdown, think of lifeless streets, police patrols and advertisements for face masks.

Sculptor Casper Braat graduated from the Sandberg Institute last year and had his first solo exhibition at Torch this fall. His exhibition was titled Forever and was about utensils that are anything but forever. We throw out a broken toaster and order a new one without even thinking about whether the thing can be repaired. These kitchen appliances have become completely interchangeable for us. Braat sculpted kitchen appliances from marble, a precious and durable material. By placing these devices on a pedestal, Braat makes us think about our consumer behaviour.

Isheanesu Dondo

Everything about Isheanesu Dondo's work is remarkable. The format, the material (cigarette packs) and the visual language, but especially the heart-warming story about how a Zimbabwean autodidact came to be represented by a Dutch gallery, without ever having been to Europe.
Isheanesu Dondo makes pen drawings on found and unfolded cigarette boxes in a style that draws on the Shona culture. Fascinating work that directly appeals to the imagination through round shapes and animal figures, while the visual language is relatively distant from us.
Gallery owner Jeanine Hofland was tipped off by Dondo's compatriot Gareth Nyandoro, who studied at the Rijksakademie and with whom she made several exhibitions. “Gareth is one of the catalysts of the Harare art scene. He has a studio there that offers space for young talent and told me about an artist (Dondo) who overcame his depression by making a drawing every day as a kind of self-therapy. I liked that idea so much that I wanted to work with him. The fact that he draws on the back of cigarette packs, which are scattered all over the streets of Harare like fallen leaves, appealed to me. On the inside of those packages are often also sweepstakes and prize competitions, which makes his drawings look like little wishes for the universe. ”

Die Qual der Wahl, as the Germans call it. The agony of choice. Choosing from Sigrid Calon's riso prints is indeed very difficult, because they are all equally compelling. Fortunately, choosing is no longer necessary with this beautifully executed book that includes 120 of Calon's grid compositions. Within the grid she explores all possible shapes and colours.

This remains one of the most fascinating photos I've seen in a long time. You immediately think: "Just how did you do that?" and immediately afterwards: “How do you get out of here?”. The German artist Isabelle Wenzel is a kind of acrobat. She squeezes herself into an almost impossible pose and waits for the self-timer. The photo freezes the shape of her body over time, drawing our attention to the body's sculptural qualities.

Head straight to Fons Welters for this one. For the price of less than 88 packs of Cornflakes (excluding VAT and if not on offer) you have a real Job Koelewijn! For Koelewijn, language and our understanding of it are central. He has applied contrasting statements to the packet of Cornflakes, making the packet of breakfast cereals very concrete and elusive at the same time. Do you agree or are statements such as be more instinctive and be more meditated simply incompatible? Koelewijn sees it differently: "One of the seductive aspects of a contradiction is that it appeals to both the lofty and the capricious aspects of the mind." A gift that you can chew on for a while as well.

This black square with glitter is, according to Marc Bijl, the glam rock version of Malevich’s suprematist square. Bijl is the master of the quote and reference. He regularly quotes other painters such as Rothko, Mondrian, Robert Indiana, and uses internationally known symbols such as the peace sign. He does this to address myths and undermine positions of power, but also to enable new interpretations. This time around Bijl applies that strategy to the work of Malevich, producing the glam rock version. That double reference is clever. The significance of Malevich’s work, like that of glam rock icons like David Bowie and Elton John, is so great that you cannot ignore it, taking up so much space that it becomes a cliché.
