As I write these pieces for GalleryViewer, I realize once again how lucky I am. It is autumn 2017, as we sit down at a table with Doeshka Vrede and Michiel Simons, the two young entrepreneurs behind Mischkin Editions. They sell editions and prints. An evening to remember. The food is delicious, the wine flows freely and the conversations are great. All evening, a portrait by Emo Verkerk looks at me: a seriously looking young man, his eyes narrowed slightly and his eyebrows slightly crooked. I look back. Who is this young man? What is he trying to tell me? I'm still not quite sure, despite seeing it every day since getting it for my birthday in January 2018. In addition to landscapes and spatial images, Verkerk's oeuvre mainly consists of portraits. Sometimes drawn, sometimes sculpted, but mostly painted. As a base, he uses various materials including paper, linen, cardboard, tin, marble and wood. Objects can also serve as a carrier. The Out of Office. Art treasures from companies exhibition that opened in Museum Singer Laren in 2019 contained a fantastic portrait by Verkerk, painted on a plastic bucket: one of my favourite works from the exhibition.
