It will hardly have escaped your notice: the international art world has gathered in Basel this week. The Swiss city is hosting several art fairs simultaneously, including Art Basel, Liste Art Fair, VOLTA and, for photography enthusiasts: Photo Basel, a fair devoted entirely to the photographic medium.
At Volkshaus Basel, galleries from Switzerland and abroad are presenting a wide range of photography until Sunday 21 June, from established names to emerging talent. Among the participants are Bildhalle and Rademakers Gallery, both of which are presenting an online viewing room on GalleryViewer. Together, they offer an intriguing glimpse into the breadth and diversity of contemporary photography today.
Bildhalle presents work by artists from the United States, Spain, Denmark and the Netherlands at Photo Basel. The gallery's presentation includes works by Jeffrey Conley, Ilona Langbroek, the artist duo Albarrán Cabrera, Paul Cupido, Adam Jeppesen, Joost Vandebrug and Casper Faassen. Although their practices differ considerably, each artist uses photography as a means of capturing more than the visible world alone. Their works possess a distinct poetic quality and explore themes such as memory, time, landscape, identity and imagination. You can find Bildhalle at booth 29. View the online viewing room here.
Rademakers Gallery is participating in the fair for the second time this year, with support from the Mondriaan Fund. The gallery is featuring a duo presentation with works by Jens Buis and Carla van de Puttelaar. In Buis's abstract works, light, materiality and space play a central role, while Van de Puttelaar works figuratively, exploring flora and the human body through sensitive and meticulously composed portraits and studies. You can discover the presentation at booth 7. Explore the online viewing room here.
Photo Basel also includes presentations by galleries that participated in Unseen / Art Rotterdam earlier this year, including IBASHO, Dorothée Nilsson Gallery, Camara Oscura Galeria De Arte, Newhouse Gallery, Ira Stehmann Fine Art and Suite 59 Gallery.
