The activist artist melanie bonajo explores complex human relationships in their practice: our relationship with technology, nature, our capitalist society, as well as interpersonal relationships and the accompanying feelings of alienation and lack of connection that many people experience. In seeking this connectedness, bonajo delves into topics including spirituality, gender, intimacy and sexuality, anti-capitalism, somatic therapy and embodied experiences, cultural norms, and body politics — often venturing beyond the mainstream. Their multidisciplinary practice includes video, performance, photography and installation. bonajo obtained a degree at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, followed by residencies at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam and the International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York. The artist was nominated for a Prix de Rome and a Nam June Paik Award and received an IFFR Tiger Award. In 2022, they represented the Netherlands at the Venice Biennale. Their work has also been shown at FOMU Antwerp, the Bonnefantenmuseum, FOAM Amsterdam, Museum Seoul, the Gwangju Biennale, Manifesta 12, ARKEN Museum for Modern Art, Tate Modern, Kunsthalle Basel and Les Rencontres d’Arles. The installation "When the Body Says Yes", which premiered in Venice, is currently on display at KUMU in Tallinn.
