Maurice Nuiten 1990

Lives in Breda. Works in Breda.

Let’s postulate that being born is an inconvenience. Thursday, June 13, 2019, 8:10:30 PM. At the moment I am : 928610910 seconds or 15476848 minutes and 30 seconds or 257947 hours, 28 minutes and 30 seconds or 10747 days, 19 hours, 28 minutes and 30 seconds or 1535 weeks, 2 days, 19 hours, 28 minutes and 30 or seconds or 353 months, 0 weeks, 4 days, 19 hours, 28 minutes and 30 seconds or 29 years, 5 months, 0 weeks, 4 days, 19 hours, 28 minutes and 30 seconds old. I made up the balance of my life, but why all this? Because I was born. So here we are, here and now, but now is already over. It’s over the moment that you think about it. It is already part of the past, but the past cannot be changed, and the only thing we have left is the future. Words that I have spoken cannot be undone, just like my past actions, they have been done. Irreversible. Even when we stand still we are still moving. There is no way to stop this, but we can capture it, to save it at least for the time being. “Why are we here?” – the big question without an unequivocal answer. This question forms my existential research framework, looking for an answer in which I plays with real life and (pseudo)-science. This inconvenience of being born comes with life and life comes with love and loss, social pressure and expectations. We can always keep up the appearance that we are settled, play pretend that everything is fine. Never knowing what is going to happen next, being everything and simultaneously nothing, but mostly just restless. Living in a haze, trying to forget and escape reality. I don’t call myself a “photographer” in the medium specific sense of the word, performance, photography, film, installation and text are part of the explorations. The scope of instruments provides a broader pallet to address the conditions of my/our existence.

He is represented by Gallery Josilda da Conceição, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The visual language of Maurice Nuiten is characterized by the use of the naked body (often maneuvered in surrealistic postures), everyday objects and daily life. However, performance forms the basis of the work, both as a form of research but also as a method to arrive at the final image or text.
