Marije Gertenbach (1990) is a Dutch artist based in Amsterdam.
Gertenbach tells stories and evokes atmosphere, in the past mostly in figurative painting, less so nowadays.
She is fascinated by frescoes and wall painting. After studying frescoes in Tuscany she has conducted extensive research into materials and techniques and analysed which emotions can be conjured up using various types of paint, like mineral paint and tempera. As well as questioning herself what happens when frescoes are removed from their original context. Can they function as autonomous works. What is left of the atmosphere of the original? At what point is meaning lost? In removing, the works lose their original physical context, but the functional context is often already gone.
She believes historical artworks reflect the communal values of another time and place. Gertenbach extrapolates collective historic ideas into the present in paintings and in site specific installations.
In 2016 Marije Gertenbach completed the Rijksakademie Amsterdam. Her work is included in various private and corporate collections in the Netherlands, India and the collection of Museum Voorlinden.
She exhibited in Amsterdam, Dordrecht, Xiamen China and Djupivogur Iceland.
