Silvia's art work interrogates the narratives connecting people and landscapes through a self-reflective approach.
Using drawing, analogue photography and frottage (rubbings) to reveal experiential knowledge of the natural environment,
its physical and social past.
The sites Silvia explores are found where the land is marked by traces of elemental forces such as eroded coastlines, or by the signs of human presence in the form of rock carvings and ancient monuments, scattered within the landscape. Recent drawings take as their starting point the descriptions of individuals moving through landscapes. Captured in audio recordings or real-time phone calls, the information is documented as marks on paper, drawn blind-folded in a gestural process. The chemicals and elements affecting geographical formations are reflected in the darkroom. The images that emerge from expired photographic papers emphasise visions and reminiscences of particular places. Subjected to a collage-like method, layers of personal and collective histories become indistinguishable in re-constructed scenes. Large-scale frottages of rock faces are created on site over an extended period of time. This personal archive of drawings not only records the geological features of the landscape but also embodies the memories and activities involved in its making.
