Part historical painter and part documentarian, Yun-Fei Ji is a storyteller who takes historical and present-day events and lives of ordinary people as the subjects of his work. Accounts of displacement, natural disasters and corrupt power in the villages are turned into semi-fictional narratives.
Yun-Fei Ji paints, according to traditional Eastern art-making practice, on handmade rice paper with translucent ink or paint based on natural pigments. His peculiar draftsmanship draws on centuries old techniques, including calligraphy. His subjects evoke traditional Chinese landscape painting: figures and scenes recall tales and epics from Chinese folklore and history. His work echoes the oeuvre of the ancient Dynasty Masters, whose paintings combined compositional and technical brilliance with expression of sorrow and melancholy, conveying an underlying political message. Ji depicts the internal difficulties of the Chinese culture, e.g. the human tragedies caused by the building of The Three Gorges Dam or the failure of the communist utopia, while at the same timing expanding his focus by referring to the societal disruptions following Hurricane Katrina, the invasion of Iraq or the terrorist attacks of 9/11. By borrowing past events to comment on present problematic developments, the artist creates particularly layered works illustrating both a personal and symbolical fantasy and a more global, existential human tragedy and beauty.

Yun-Fei Ji - The village and its ghosts
Ji husselt autobiografische en symbolische structuren door elkaar, evenals Chinese en Westerse kunstmotieven, waardoor het in zachte waterkleuren gelaagde geheel uitnodigt om tussen de lijntjes te lezen. Zo duiden her en der haast Boschiaanse gedrochten op in de scènes, bijvoorbeeld een hanenkop op een skeletgeraamte: wanneer je weet dat de haan in de Chinese cultuur de notie van vooruitgang vertegenwoordigt, genereert het beeld een lezing die even subtiel als snedig is. Gedreven door een overweldigend gevoel van verlies van waarde, kanaliseert Ji's werk China's ethisch geweten en moraal kompas, maar appelleert het bovenal aan het globale (en actuele) verhaal van 'de mens in transitie'.

Ghosts and Ghouls on Grand Street
As an exhibition of paintings Yun-Fei Ji's haunting performance manages to throw another light on how the approach to ink painting remains closely bound to Chinese history. In doing so, Ji makes clear that which is most important to him draws intentionally and purposefully on the past as a means to exorcise the hidden realities of the present. Put another way, there is no overt political theme in these paintings other than the tension by which Ji's brushwork is embedded within the representation of each figure, object, and landscape. In this sense, the brush becomes an indirect signifier of revolt.

Yun-Fei Ji took part in the Whitney Biennial in New York in 2002, the Lyon Biennale in 2011, the Biennale of Sydney in 2012, Shanghai Biennale in 2014. ‘The Old One Hundred Names’ at Zeno X Gallery in 2003 was Yun-Fei Ji’s first European exhibition and was successfully adopted by the Pratt Institute in New York. The solo exhibition ‘The Empty City’ opened at the Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louis in 2004 and travelled further to The Rose Art Museum of Brandeis University in Waltham and the Richard E. Peeler Art Center in Greencastle.
Other solo exhibitions dedicated to his work were organized by The Hilliard University Art Museum in Lafayette (2017), the Honolulu Art Museum (2016), Cleveland Museum of Art (2016), UMCA in Amherst (2015), Krannert Art Museum in Champaign, Illinois (2013), Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing (2012), the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts (2008) and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia (2004), amongst others.
