The oeuvre of Johan De Wit (born 1960, Belgium) largely consists of sculptures, videos and picturesque objects. His works evoke associations with childhood memories, vanity and melancholy. The artist combines his love for aesthetics with everyday objects as a pot, a table or a ladder into abstract shapes. De Wit investigates, with a restless openness, both art history’s still life and landscape tradition and the refined craftsmanship he seeks in his own work. This is reflected in his search for materiality, textures and color. A paper 3D-model forms the basis for each of his most recent series of objects. After reinforcing it with resins, De Wit reworks the model during the drying process to create folds and dents, finishing up each piece with different colors and shades of paint.
