Johan De Wit 1960

Lives in Ghent (BE). Works in Ghent (BE).

The oeuvre of Johan De Wit (1960, BE) largely consists of sculptures, videos and picturesque objects. His works evoke associations such as childhood memories, vanity and melancholy. The artist combines his love for aesthetic objects with everyday life ranging from a pot, a table or a ladder to abstract shapes.De Wit recognizes a kind of the restless openness in both the still lifes and the landscapes in art history but also the refined craftsmanship he seeks in his own work. This is reflected in his search for materiality, textures and colour. A paper 3D-model forms the basis for each of his most recent series of objects. After reinforcing it with resins, De Wit reworks the model during the drying process to create folds and dents, finishing up each piece with different colours and shades of paint.
