Simona Denicolai (° 1972, Milan, Italy) and Ivo Provoost (° 1974, Diksmuide, Belgium) have been working as an artist duo for more than twenty years on a multidisciplinary practice that tries to disrupt our habitual thinking and routine behavior. Via protocols and scenarios, which they write out with great attention to the individuality of a place, they involve people, objects and stories as 'employees' in the artistic process. The exchanges thus created are embedded in a local reality, but also touch on universal themes such as citizenship, identity and solidarity.
They refer to their process-based working method as "sculptural action" and comprise actions that disconnect, rearrange or connect existing elements from their familiar context into new forms. They are reflected in various forms such as performances, video work, installations, models and studies, all of which derive meaning from the interpretation of art as an active concept.
The exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of the work of Denicolai & Provoost and provides the first museum presentation of their recent animation film "HELLO, ARE WE IN THE SHOW?" (2019). The film is a co-production with S.M.A.K. and was converted into an impressive installation for the occasion.
