The series The Path of The Caterpillar originates in a journey Karin van Dam made with Ed Pien in Canada where they visited the mines of Lethbridge and descended in to a pit: an installation by Canadian artist Linda Duvall, where caterpillars had made pathways in the walls. In this work Karin van Dam uses a broad grahpite stick to make circles that subtly stand out in skimming ligtht. The form refers to the crystalline structure of coal and the cellular structure that underlies natural forms.
