This work is part of the series 'Funeral Home the North Sea' (2020/ 2021). The series presents a futuristic and imaginative take on the burial of human remains. Artist Jonat Deelstra proposes to place burial structures in the North Sea on which coral and anemones can settle.
Jonat: "Due to an increasingly warmer climate, an enormous amount of coral could grow in the North Sea in the next hundred years. But because the sea has been fished literally bare, these organisms cannot yet establish themselves. By placing structures in the sea, we can ensure rebirth." In 2018, the first step has already been taken; wind turbines have been placed in the North Sea. The intention is to create a coral reef between these wind turbines and a new burial ritual.
