'How can a work made by an artist be reconciled with the way that work is seen by the
viewer? After making a case containing a tropical butterfly like a jewel, Van Warmerdam stuck strips
of reflective aluminium tape on the window of the case. The title of the work was soon decided.'
Marijke van Warmerdam (1959, Nieuwer Amstel, NL) is internationally renowned for her short films, photographs and sculptures, forming an extraordinarily consistent body of work. She first arose international attention at the Dutch pavilion of the Venice Biennial 1995 with her looped short-films, a medium, which involved a characteristic amendment of the film projector.
In her work she portrays minute moments of life, manipulating them with simple, usually mechanic techniques such as repetition, mirroring or shifts in focus. Van Warmerdam creates an abstraction, a timeless, nearly still moment.
