Van Zomeren gets his inspiration mainly in daily life. He always has a camera at hand; photograph nature or the Intratuin, it does not matter. Greenhouse from 2018, for example, arose from the immense image bank of photos. The early work shows Van Zomeren has long been looking for abstraction in a recognizable world.
This quest becomes even clearer in Strata: a realistic representation of a blind, but where everything around it has been cut away so that at first glance it is not clear what we see. You could also interpret the work as an abstract play of lines and areas of color.
